The Phoenix Wright series of games have been a huge hit worldwide since they were first released in Japan on the Gameboy Advance (although it’s the Nintendo DS ports that the western world are more familiar with). The franchise is so big that a few months ago, it was confirmed that there is a live-action film in development for release next Spring. Yesterday, a trailer was posted to youtube.
Directed by Miike Takashi (Ichi the Killer , Audition), Gyakuten Saiban (The Japanese name for the game series, meaning “Ace Attorney”) is set in an alternate world Japan where due to an increased crime rate, the emphasis on trials is speed rather than accuracy. Judging from the trailer, the story of the film will be based on the DL-6 Incident portion of the first game, the final episode in the first Ace Attorney game (the penultimate in the DS port).
Unlike the films Miike Takashi is known for, Gyakuten Saiban will not be full of blood and violence that pushes the censors to their limits; it it’s a light comedy courtroom drama. The film will star Hiroki Narimiya as Phoenix Wright (known as Ryūichi Naruhodō in the Japanese version), Kiritani Mirei as Maya Fey and Saito Tamuki will as Miles Edgeworth.
