So after the PETA fiasco when they called upon the attention of Mario wearing fur in the new ‘Super Mario 3D Land’ along with creating their own little game where a skinless Tanooki tries to get back his stolen fur from an evil Mario, PETA has released this statement:
“Mario fans: Relax! PETA’s game was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur. We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins. You can help them by never buying real fur.”
It seems to me that they were serious about it at first, but they then saw what was going to be an onslaught of angry Mario fans and decided to back down. Or maybe it genuinely was their original message just interpreted wrong. Who knows? I’m not even sure PETA does.
