If you’re in the anime or manga fandom and have not heard about Attack On Titan, than frankly, you’ve been living under a rock. Based on a manga of the same name, Attack On Titan is an anime series that is currently airing and has proven to be unbelievably popular – it is set in a strange future, where humanity has been confided into a single area the size of Texas for over 100 years due to the threat of the “Titans” – giant humanoids who appear to have no other purpose than to devour humanity. After having been protected by huge walls for a century, a giant 50 metre tall Titan appears, destroying one of the crucial gates, reawakening humanity to the horrors of the Titans.
It is so popular in fact, that was well as receiving a browser game, a 3DS game has also been announced. It will be developed by Spike Chunsoft (Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates To Infinity, Danganronpa) and will be released in Japan later this year. While many fans of the series are hoping for an open world action game with gameplay similar to the Spider-Man games (me included), it seems more likely that this game could turn out to be a Visual Novel.
Usually, I don’t report about games that are most likely going to be Japan-only (hence why I haven’t written about the HighSchool DxD New 3DS game), but due to the popularity of the series a lot of people are hoping that this game will be localised – I doubt it will happen, but hey. What is interesting though is, in the previous gaming generation, a lot of the anime-based games were being released for the PlayStation Portable (although the DS did receive some) and even now, the PSP seems to be the platform of choice over the Vita, but a lot more 3DS titles are being announced lately. Could there be a shift for otaku-based games?
