Saturday saw the worldwide launch of the Nintendo 3DS exclusive Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (Hence why we’ve been quiet – we’re all playing it!). While this will no doubt be a stellar seller for Nintendo and GameFreak, one question that has always lingered is, with so many great games coming out around this time of year, how will it fare against the competition?
The first set of figures come from our native United Kingdom, which shows that Pokémon has gone neck to neck with recent high sellers FIFA 14 and Grand Theft Auto V, which both launched recently for the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360. Depending on how you look at the sales chart though, the results are pretty different.
In terms of individual sales, Pokémon X entered the charts in the top spot, with Pokémon Y in second place; outselling GTAV and FIFA 14 on individual platforms. If you combine the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 sales of both games though, they knock X and Y into 3rd and 4th place respectively. If sales of both X and Y are combined though, then the new generation of Pokémon began by topping the all format chart.
Another interesting point is that today is only the second official day that XY have been on sale (not counting stores selling the game slightly early), so sales may yet increase as the week goes on. In comparison though, FIFA and GTAV have been on sale for many weeks now, so the initial sales rush will have passed.
Things aren’t so positive for The Legend of Wind Waker HD though. At launch, the game entered the All Format Chart in fourth place, but has no dropped down to number 10. If you split multi-platform games into their individual releases, then the game is now out of that Top 10 list – which is almost a mirror of what happened when Pikmin 3.
