Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series of tactical role-playing games was in real trouble two years ago; sales of the franchise were steadily falling and developer Intelligent Systems were faced with an ultimatum – to make a brand new game and if it failed to reverse the series’ misfortunes, then it would be the last ever Fire Emblem game. With that hanging over their heads, the development team poured their hearts into making the best game they could an in April 2012, Fire Emblem: Awakening was released in Japan, which would be followed by a North American release the following February and a European release two months after that – a year to the day it came out in Japan. Intelligent System’s hard work had paid off, as Fire Emblem: Awakening received both critical and commercial success, becoming the highest rated and fastest selling game in the franchise. The game also scooped up four awards in our first WiiUAndMii Awards, including the coveted “Game of the Year”.
While Intelligent Systems are busy at work with Atlus developing the Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem Wii U game, Nintendo has today revealed that the team has also been working on an eShop exclusive title as a way of thanking the franchise’s loyal fans for the huge success of the franchise’s first 3DS outing: Fire Emblem: Heart’s Awakening (known in Japan as Fire Emblem: Kakusuki, a portmanteau of Fire Emblem: Kakusei and “suki”, meaning “like”). Unlike the main series of role-playing games, Fire Emblem: Heart’s Awakening is a Dating Sim spin-off title that expands on the relationship feature in Fire Emblem: Awakening, allowing players to form a relationship with one of six of Fire Emblem: Awakening‘s post popular heroes or heroines – with male players’ six possible choices including Lucina, Tharja and Nowi, while female players’ line-up of six lucky bachelors including Chrom, Gaius and Ricken. As a bonus for players of Fire Emblem: Awakening, if you have have played through that game you will be able to access exclusive routes for Owain and Severa.
Set during the events of Fire Emblem: Awakening, this new game will allow players to help their chosen partner in chores around the camp site, complete minigames and even simply by a shoulder for them to lean on using the full extent of the Nintendo 3DS’ hardware features to bring a new level of diversion to the dating sim genre through the use of the 3DS’ cameras, microphone and augmented reality features to let you interact with your chosen partner in brand new ways, which in time will increase their fondness for the player, triggering events that might even lead up to marriage!
