The debate of same-sex relationships in Nintendo’s upcoming outside-the-box life simulator Tomodachi Life certainly caused a lot of debate across the internet and even a campaign to try and get them added in. Two days ago, Nintendo of America spoke to ABC News and what was said…caused a bit of a backlash to say the least. Today however, the company has issued a revised statement on their official website:
We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game’s design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch. At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.
Someone must have realised that their last statement really rubbed the people the wrong way. Considering that the original glitch was solved with a patch, I do doubt Nintendo’s claim that same-sex relationships couldn’t be patched into the game in some way. While the last part of the statement doesn’t promise same-sex relationships in a future Tomodachi game, it is promising though.
