It was The Game Awards this week, but we didn’t get Zelda Wii U footage like last year. However, we did still get some Zelda goodness, in the form of Hardwell’s fantastic Gerudo Valley remix.
So, continuing in that vein, Hyrule Weekly has gone in search of more Zelda remixes and covers for you to feast your ears on! Need some tunes while you do that work? Just fancy listening to some awesome Zelda music? We’ve got you covered.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Gerudo Valley (Hardwell Remix) – Hardwell
Let’s start with a recent one. Hardwell’s remix of Gerudo Valley retains the classic parts of the tune that we know and love, but incorporates new sounds and also a few classic sounds (watch out for Link’s cry!). Hardwell describes Ocarina of Time as one of his favourite games, and he has crafted a remix worthy of the Gerudo Valley name.
Zelda Wind Waker – Dragon Roost Island Acapella – Smooth McGroove
Chances are you have heard of Smooth McGroove before, with his YouTube Channel having over 1 million subscribers. He has done many acapella versions of Zelda tracks, but Dragon Roost Island is a standout. The notes this guy hits (see 1:02) are pretty amazing. If you enjoy this, go and take a listen to his other videos too!
Gerudo Valley (from Zelda OoT) Violin – Taylor Davis
Another Gerudo Valley one here, but one that is really worth checking out. Not only is the violin version of the track beautifully done, but the effort that has clearly gone into the accompanying video is unbelievable. The creation of a Zelda scenario has been done very well – and Davis hasn’t just done Gerudo Valley, with Kokiri Forest and Bolero of Fire two more Ocarina of Time tracks she has taken the violin to. Check her YouTube Channel out if you want to hear more.
Zelda – Song of Storms (Deon Custom Remix) – Trap Nation
Back to the remix side of things here. A lot of dubstep versions and remixes tend to go over the top, but Trap Nation’s Deon Custom Remix strikes a good balance between adding a dance beat and retaining what makes Song of Storms so great in the first place. A solid remix, here.
Zelda Techno Remix – Ballad of the Goddess – DJ Lozenges
Skyward Sword and techno, two things I always associate with each other. Jokes aside, this is another stylish remix, with the techno beat complimenting – rather than smothering – the magical Ballad of the Goddess.
Zelda: Majora’s Mask – Majora’s Wrath (Orchestra) – Harpistry
From techno to orchestra! This Majora’s Mask track has been given the full orchestra treatment, and comes out with even more urgency and drama that fits the the tone of this dark Zelda title.
Legend of Zelda Theme – Donkey Konga
What happens if you combine the GameCube’s musical Donkey Konga game and the theme to Zelda? A really cool, if slightly surreal, version of the music.
The Game Awards 2014 – It’s Time – Koji Kondo & Imagine Dragons
Yes, this is partly Zelda track and partly Imagine Dragons track. I can’t not include this, though, as the utter beauty of what these artists achieve here is stunning. Imagine Dragons’ It’s Time gets something special added to it; when Koji Kondo starts playing to the tune of the track, you can’t help but be caught up in the moment. It was a fitting way to end The Game Awards in 2014.
There are plenty of great remixes and covers of Zelda music out there – these are just a few that shine through the crowd. Any others you would like to have seen make the list? Let us know in the comments – meanwhile, I’m off to listen to a few of these again. See you next week!
