One month today, the global phenomenon that is the Pokémon franchise will be celebrating its twentieth anniversary; commemorating two decades since the Japanese launch of Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green on 27th February 1996. As revealed earlier this month, one aspect of the festivities will be a brand new mythical Pokémon every month from February until the end of the year and today, The Pokémon Company International has confirmed to us where the first distribution will take place.
Mew was the franchise’s first ever Mythical Pokémon; having been snuck into the game’s code so secretly that not even Nintendo initially knew about it. Being the first, it is only fitting that the New Species Pokémon leads the way for this year’s unprecedented series of giveaways; being available to download in GAME stores in the United Kingdom between 1-28 February; which will also be stocking merchandise such as a Mew plush toy, figurine and exclusive t-shirt. The Mew will be available by requesting a free, single-use serial code at the counter, which can then be redeemed on copies of Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.
The downloaded Mew will be level 100 and will know the single move “Pound”; likely owing to the Pokémon’s unique characteristic of being able to learn every TM, HM and almost every Move Tutor move.
In North America, the Mew distribution will take place at GameStop retail locations.
