The Pokémon Company surprised fans earlier this week with the sudden announcement of Detective Pikachu – Birth of a New Combination, a brand new Nintendo 3DS title that will be available exclusively on the Nintendo eShop in Japan next week. While the Pikachu we’ve come to love over these past twenty years has commonly been associated with Ikue Otani’s now-iconic high pitched voice, this new title introduced us to a yellow mouse who can not only speak the human tongue, but does so in a deep, manly voice. The internet fell in love with the game at first sight and fans are eager for the title to be released overseas – but they clearly believe an A-list gaming star can only be voiced by an A-list actor.
The Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning actor Danny DeVito, well known for his roles in films such as Taxi, Batman Returns and Hercules is the apparent fan choice to portray the famous yellow critter in his unusual new outing; with a petition created by Sairith Aramor yesterday having collected over 6000 signatures at time of writing.
While the choice is undoubtedly perfect, it would unfortunately be unlikely that The Pokémon Company International or Nintendo of America would be willing to spare the expense of hiring such a prolific actor, but it is a milestone birthday for Pikachu, so maybe fans could twist their arm a bit? If you would like to support the petition, you can do so here!
