Nintendo have been hounded for it so long that it even emerged as a joke in Nintendo’s 2014 Digital Event, but it looks like the day many have asked for yet never expected may soon be on the horizon. However, it looks like Nintendo may be preparing to celebrate the milestone anniversary of a cult franchise…no, not The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon or Metroid (pfft) – Shigesato Itoi’s role-playing game franchise Mother (known internationally as Earthbound).
This coming 20th April will mark ten years since the Japanese release of the Game Boy Advance title Mother 3; the third and currently final title in the series. The game was never released outside of Japan but according to reputable sources with links to the gaming company, that will be changing later this year. Following the incredibly positive reaction to the 2013 digital re-release of EarthBound and last year’s release of the long-shelved EarthBound Beginnings, Nintendo Europe have apparently been working on a localisation which will be released later this year as a digital download from the Wii U’s Virtual Console service.
After being a playable character in the Wii’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mother 3‘s protagonist Lucas was made available to purchase as an add-on content fighter for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U last year. An amiibo interactive figurine of Lucas was released internationally earlier this month.
