In Nintendo’s recently announced financials, Pokémon Sun & Moon have shown themselves as a major reason behind a healthy year for 3DS software.
With 14.69 million units sold, Pokémon Sun & Moon are the headline act here, though Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS has also passed 1 million for 3DS. That number for Sun & Moon puts them 3rd on the lifetime sales list for 3DS, behind only Pokémon X & Y (16.06 million) and Mario Kart 8 (14.82 million). It is very feasible that Sun & Moon could pass both of those with its tail of sales.
Nintendo have made a statement stating Pokémon Go‘s massive success last year as something that helped sales figures for Sun & Moon:
“The release of the smart device application Pokémon GO led to increased sales of software in the Pokémon series released in the past and drove Nintendo 3DS family hardware sales growth, particularly outside of Japan,”
Here is how Pokémon Sun & Moon compare to the other major Pokémon games on 3DS in terms of lifetime sales:
- Pokémon X & Y Versions: 16.06 Million
- Pokémon Sun & Moon Versions: 14.69 Million
- Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Versions: 13.68 Million
Wii U’s software sales were less impressive, however – only 12.48 million sold compared to the astronomic number of 46.78 million (an increase of 20% on the year prior) for 3DS. That’s not particularly surprising, given that there are fewer Wii U console owners and the system itself is winding down ready for the Switch’s imminent arrival.
