There wasn’t really ever any reason to doubt its chances, but fans of Sunrine’s multimedia juggernaut Love Live! Sunshine!! are overjoyed today at official confirmation that we will be returning to Uranohoshi Girls’ Academy for an encore performance from the anime idol group Aqours, in Autumn 2017! The new season was announced as part of Japan’s Aqours’ First LoveLive! ~Step! ZERO TO ONE~ concert in Yokohama this weekend, the first live event featuring the new idol group.
Inspired by the actions of μ’s in the first Love Live! School Idol Project television anime series, Sunshine moves away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, settling down in the ocean-bearing Uchiura, where the bubbly and impulsive Chika Takami has set up an idol group of her own, Aqours, in the hopes of saving the ailing Uranohoshi Girl’s Academy from closure.
With some fans critical of how Sunshine‘s first season stayed too close to the formula of School Idol Project, many are looking to the character-driven strength of the latter’s own sequel season (Episode 5, “A New Me“, anyone?) in hopes of a more focused follow-up now that the main group has been assembled.
Originally broadcast from July 2016, the first season of Love Live! Sunshine!! is available for streaming in the United Kingdom and NI on Crunchyroll, while North American fans can tune in via Funimation Now. The first iteration of the idol franchise, Love Live! School Idol Project spawned two television anime series’ from January 2013, as well as the theatrical Love Live! The School Idol Movie in June 2015. Both seasons of Love Live! School Idol Project are available on DVD/blu-ray courtesy of MVM Entertainment, while Sunshine has been licensed by Anime Limited.
