This Wednesday, Sword Art Online fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland will finally be able to see their favourite characters (and Silica) on the big screen. Before Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale hits however, we thought it time to educate you all on the series’ Top 5 Best Girls:
5. Suguha “Leafa” Kirigaya
The story arc that introduced us to Suguha may be controversial for a number of reasons, but once you strip back the unfortunate narrative circumstance surrounding her character development (the cousin-twist doesn’t work for western audiences outside Norwich), at her core, Suguha is a sweet, young girl who just wants to support her older brother. Really, there’s nothing wrong with that – she just needs more opportunities to show off what she can do. Suguha didn’t do anything wrong; she just happened to fall in love with the wrong guy. Also, she looks pretty badass sporting an Augma, so there is that too.
4. Shinozaki “Lisbeth” Rika
If any character deserves more screen time however, then it’s without a doubt Aincrad’s most talented blacksmith. Our introduction to Lisbeth was the most powerful of the first arc’s solo introductions; the tragic tale of a young girl realising an unrequited love. Subsequent releases have demonstrated an unrivalled knack for playing the straightman to the series’ more eccentric cast members – I’ve personally been advocating for a Lisbeth-Klein road-trip spin off for years!
3. Asuna Yuuki
As the main heroine of Sword Art Online, Asuna has been given more opportunities than most to show us just how well-rounded of a character she is. While the romantic interest of Kirito, the series discarded the cliché of making Asuna the girl who waited for her hero to return home and instead, had her join him on the front lines as an exceptional swordswoman. Contrary to the way a lot of female action leads are depicted, Asuna’s more feminine side is also given ample opportunity to breath; creating a character who is rough, delicate, fearless and caring in equal measure.
2. Asada “Sinon” Shino
Being introduced to a character amidst their inner turmoil, which is resolved by the time they join our hero when their character arc ends is nothing new. Where Sinon’s struggle with her past trauma stands out though, is her resolve to overcome it even before meeting Kirito. Despite her phobia of guns, we first meet Sinon in the depths of first-person-shooter MMO Gun Gale Online, where she’s already working to overcome her fear without the help of any meddling protagonist. Geez Kirito, no one needs you. Also, she’s a sniper and people like us need to stay together; it’s a hard life.
1. Tsuboi “Klein” Ryoutarou
Just…look into your heart; you know it to be true.
