Following this year’s highly anticipated re-release of Game Boy classics Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version, Nintendo has today finally confirmed plans to re-release its celebrated third version Pokémon Crystal Version as part of the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console service on 26th January, 2018.
Like with Gold and Silver, Crystal will also be released in Japan and Europe with a commemorative physical box, which will be available to purchase in stores and contain 1 download code for the game. A physical release in North America has yet to be confirmed.
Interestingly, the copy and trailer posted by Nintendo of America makes specific reference to the Mythical Pokémon Celebi, who was programmed as obtainable in the game through an event triggered by the event-only “GS Ball” item, which was only distributed in Japan. In the Japanese version of the game, completing the Elite 4 will reward you with the “GS Ball” item, allowing you to catch Celebi. The distribution method for other regions has yet to be confirmed.
Pokémon Crystal Version is notable for being the first main series Pokémon title with the option of playing as a female character.
In addition, a Pikachu themed New Nintendo 2DS XL console will be available to purchase in Europe on the same day.
