EARTH WARS added to line-up (25th January)
This week, there are some standout eShop releases to keep an eye on. In particular, the retro-styled, fast-paced platformer Celeste from the people behind Towerfall: Ascension. Also, there is a Pokémon Virtual Console release and, as ever, plenty of Switch releases. Here it is, then; your eShop schedule for the next 7 days starting 25th January.
Thursday 25th January
Switch, £6.29 – D3 Publisher
“A simple yet exhilarating tennis game to play anytime!”
Wisely getting out before Mario Tennis Aces, this cartoon sports game is summed up by the name Tennis. It comes with 8 characters in 6 courts, and features multiplayer in split-screen or across two Switch systems. Like Wii Sports, this does have motion controls with the Joy-Cons, or even touch control if you are so inclined.
ZERO GUNNER 2- for Nintendo Switch
Switch, £6.99 – Zerodiv
“Famous for its cool world and innovatively omnidirectional shooting system, ZERO GUNNER 2 is coming back as ZERO GUNNER 2-.”
In the vein of the arcade-style Psikyo Shooting games, ZERO GUNNER 2 has you piloting different vehicles in a retro shoot ’em up. There is play for 1 or 2 players, though the visuals do look a bit rough around the edges.
STRIKERS 1945 II for Nintendo Switch
Switch, £6.99 – Zerodiv
“”Psikyo” is coming back now!! “STRIKERS 1945 II for Nintendo Switch” The sequel to “STRIKERS 1945“…, it’s now for sale on Nintendo Switch™!!”
From the same publisher as ZERO GUNNER 2- comes another shoot ’em up. Y’know, if you haven’t got enough to play… Played in portrait mode on the landscape Switch screen, this has even more retro arcade callbacks than ZERO GUNNER 2-. Be warned, though – that might not be a good thing. Be careful around this one.
Switch, £17.99 – Matt Makes Games Inc.
“Uncover the secrets of the mountain and overcome your limitations to reach the summit in Celeste for Nintendo Switch.”
Celeste is the pick of the week! From the developers of the addictive and brutal Towerfall: Ascension, Celeste once again uses a beautiful pixel-art look. The focus is on platforming, with traversal coming in the form of jumping, air-dashing, and climbing. In motion, it looks brilliantly fast-paced, but be warned; the tough challenge of Towerfall is certainly still present! Combined with a renewed focus on narrative and characters, this is one to keep an eye on this week.
ACA NEO GEO WORLD HEROES 2
Switch, £6.29 – HAMSTER
“Who’s the strongest in history? A new World Heroes Tournament begins now!”
The NEO GEO games keep on a-coming. WORLD HEROES 2 is an SNK 1993 2D fighter. 14 characters and plenty of different battle strategies are included if you fancy taking a trip to the past.
Arcade Archives Kid Niki Radical Ninja
Switch, £6.29 – HAMSTER
“The extremely energetic Yanchamaru is here! Things are going to get wild!”
HAMSTER isn’t done with the retro games for the week yet! Frankly, with a name like that, it’s hard to be upset. A 1986 title from IREM, this is a platformer with a similar age to Super Mario Bros. – and some other similar elements. Defeat enemies and their bosses to get to the princess in the castle? Hm…
Island Flight Simulator
Switch, £17.99 – Joindots
“Enjoy fantastic pen-ended gameplay, touch down in the tropics and transport freight between 12 exotic islands in more than a hundred exciting missions.”
Fans of Pilotwings or the Wii Sports Resort flying mode might like to try this one. Also releasing physically, Island Flight Simulator has you using 3 different planes for transport missions (some even illegal, shock!). 12 islands are there for exploring in open-ended flying exploration.
FANTASY HERO ∼unsigned legacy∼
Switch, £8.99 – ARC SYSTEM WORKS
“Hack and slash X action RPG? stand up with the four heroes to save the world!”
This oddly-named game has you battle the Decoders, either by charging in or using ranged attacks. It’s what you’d expect from a hack’n’slash RPG, with anime graphics on top.
Dustoff Heli Rescue 2
Switch, £13.49 – Rainy Frog
“Leave no one behind! Pilot advanced combat helicopters in enemy territory!”
Into the flying of Island Flight Simulator, but looking for a more distinct art style? Well, the 3D pixel-art aircraft of Dustoff might do it for you. Take your combat helicopter behind enemy lines in 35 missions, which entail the likes of hostage rescues and convoy protection.
Switch, £8.99 – Eclipse Games
“Tachyon Project is an action-packed dual-stick shooter driven by a story.”
Playing as a rogue software program named Ada, Tachyon Project merges frantic and colourful dual-stick arcade shooter gameplay with a story that uncovers what happened to the creators off Ada. Fast-paced, top-down shooters like this are fairly common on Switch, but this is shaping up to be one of the most polished examples.
Super One More Jump
Switch, £4.99 – SMG Studio
“Super One More Jump is a hand-crafted, frantic, one touch arcade platformer.”
Who would’ve thought it – Super One More Jump is a platformer?! Joking aside, this comes from the people behind the much-liked Death Squared (also available on Switch). 1-4 players can use their own control – jump – to get through over 100 hand-crafted levels. There are also harder and endless modes that mean you should be busy with this one for a while.
Switch, £4.00 – oneoreight
“A tough, cheeky 2D action game appeared!”
Appeared it did, as EARTH WARS was off the eShop listings until popping up out of nowhere! Set un 2020, humanity is facing the end due to the mysterious E.B.E. – but a new type of armour has given them hope. The super-stylised look and music (the trailer is like walking into a nightclub) add to the boldness of this 2D action game.
Friday 26th January
Pokémon Crystal Version
3DS, £8.99 – Nintendo
“Gotta Catch ’em All!”
Not much for the 3DS this week, but Pokémon Crystal Version will satisfy many nevertheless. The third generation II Pokémon game after Gold & Silver (which are already on the 3DS Virtual Console), this added some much-needed content; in particular, the ability to play as a girl for the first time.
There are plenty of games for arcade or shooter fans this week, and also some big releases in Celeste and Pokémon Crystal. What’s on eShop will be back next Wednesday!
