Even after the bonkers casting announcements we have had before, the Detective Pikachu film cast continues to surprise; a new exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Rita Ora has joined the project.
The popular singer and actress, recently starring in the trilogy-ending Fifty Shades Freed, has been added to a cast led by Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool). Her role is unknown for now, though it will probably be quite far removed from Christian Grey’s sister Mia in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. Well, let’s hope, anyway – we don’t need Detective Pikachu going in that direction.
Detective Pikachu is currently shooting under the direction of Rob Letterman (Goosebumps). Other notable, and similarly surprising, cast members include Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), Bill Nighy (Love Actually), and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies). In the film, a character played by Justice Smith (The Get Down) receives help to find his kidnapped father – an that help comes in the form of none other than Detective Pikachu.
Legendary is the production company behind the film, which will release on 10th May 2019. The 3DS game that inspired this whole bizarre series of events is coming west, too, launching on 23rd March 2018.
