Action-Adventure game The Wonderful 101 earned a relatively small yet passionate fanbase when it released as a Wii U exclusive, and developers PlatinumGames have revealed they are trying to bring it to Switch!
Co-founders of PlatinumGames, Hideki Kamiya and Atsushi Inaba, recently discussed the game at the Reboot Develop 2018 Conference. At the event, they received warm responses to questions concerning how many people there had played the game, and how many would like a Switch version.
A comment made by Atsushi Inaba (translated by Ben Judd; this information is via Nintendo Everything) was that “Hopefully Nintendo will see how excited you all were, and not place the blame on them, and seriously consider that as an opportunity.”
Hideki Kamiya also talked on the topic (again translated by Ben Judd), explaining how “… he was absolutely super proud of being able to make that game, but obviously it didn’t sell a ton, which is unfortunate.” He also discussed the nature of the game, with many characters being controlled at once: “… he wanted it to feel like you’re doing something different rather than just controlling one character, you’re controlling multiple groups of characters, and then able to team up and do a variety of just of course crazy, exciting things within the game.”
There is reasonable reason to think The Wonderful 101 on Switch could happen, as Bayonetta & Bayonetta 2 – a series developed by PlatinumGames – recently received Switch versions (with a third game coming exclusively to the console as well).
Back in 2013, the year of The Wonderful 101 being released, Hideki Kamiya talked about the possibility of a sequel to the game; it seems he is very invested in the property despite the lukewarm commercial reception it received. The success of the Nintendo Switch, and the new audience it brings, could be just what The Wonderful 101 needs.
