The latest in a long line of Pokémon anime fans released in Japan
Earlier today, the latest in a long line of anime films based on the Pokémon franchise opened in Japanese cinemas: Pokémon the Movie: Everyone’s Story. As is tradition, viewers in Japan who saw the movie were treated to a brief teaser of what awaits them next year, which teases the return of a fan favourite: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. The teaser reportedly included the voice of Masachika Ichimura, who portrayed Mewtwo in Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back.
The title is a reference to that of the very first Pokémon movie, Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, which first saw release in Japan in 1998. In the film, the legendary Pokémon is genetically engineered under orders of Team Rocket, before breaking loose and taking control of New Island. Mewtwo sends invitations seeking the appearance of those he considers the strongest trainers, all in preparation for his revenge against humanity.
Mewtwo later reappared in the special episode Mewtwo Returns, which was first broadcast in Japan in the year 2000. A different Mewtwo, unrelated to the previous continuity, also co-starred in 2013’s Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened.
While last year’s Pokémon the Movie I Choose You already featured a return to the Kanto region, with the next series of main series games returning to the iconic region this year with Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee!, capitalising on that and the game’s more limited Pokédex seems like a logical step. Although, with the film likely only releasing mere months before the previously announced Generation 8 Nintendo Switch games, who knows what surprises await us?
